Genealogy of Our “BÜHLER”

Summary

The earliest confirmed ancestors of this family are Johann Georg Bϋhler (1819-) and his wife Angelika Bosch Schmid (1826- ) who appear in the orchard photo below. They were married on 23 APR 1850 in Germany, Wϋrttenberg, Donaukreis, Schalkstetten. Both their oldest and youngest sons emigrated to Chile. Their daughter Elisabeth(1862-1914) married Jakob Dauner (1859-1909).

Most of their official information in Germany comes from Family search.org. The Bϋhler last name is common in Germany. Their custom of replicating both the first and middle names to the oldest son, has made the task difficult and we had to make some corrections over the years. We will seek corroboration from additional sources before listing other potential earlier ancestors.

Johann Georg Bϋhler (1819-) and his wife Angelika Bosch Schmid (1826- )

Their oldest son, Johann Georg Bϋhler Bosch (1854-1911), served in the German military before emmigrating to Southern Chile where, in 1879, he married Amalia Kowoll Rau (1859-1917) daughter of a polish immigrant to Chile.

They had six surviving daughters who generate the branches: Robles-Bϋhler, Ugarte-Bϋhler, Quezada-Bϋhler, Mujica-Bϋhler. Amalia also helped raise the García-Kowoll children of her sister Carmen Kowoll (1861-1901).

Of their three sons (Jorge, Carlos, Guillemo), only Jorge Bϋhler Kowoll married to Urbana Briones Searle, had male descendants.

They generated the branches Bϋhler-López, Bϋhler-Ormazábal and Lazcano-Bϋhler. These last branches have descendants living in Chile and Spain.

Matthaeus Bϋhler Bosch (1864-), followed his older brother to Southern Chile, where he worked initially in the beer industry. He bought a farm in Osorno were he married Ernestine Hott Schencke in 1893. His descendants have had an active leadership role in the agricultural industry of the region, have held public service positions around Osorno and built an important commercial and real estate business.

¨Maruja¨ Ugarte Bϋhler remembered fondly her visits at stop-overs in Osorno at ¨tío Mateo¨ when in route to Puerto Montt to spend her summer vacations with cousin Yolanda Robles Bϋhler. Contact between the descendants of the two Bϋhler-Bosch brothers has been lost. We think the photo shown below includes both brothers and would welcome help to identify the participants.

Contributors and Sources.

We are indebted to Familysearch.org and to Mauricio Pilleux’s website genealog.cl among many others. However, much of the inside genealogical information has been provided over many years by sisters M. Eliana and Paulina B.L. via electronic messages and calls. Maruja Ugarte Bϋhler kept close contact with her Bϋhler cousins and relayed information obtained by Blanca Mujica Bϋhler. The photo below shows an informal cocktail at Maruja´s apartment in Santiago, Chile in 2004.

Priorities for Future Research.

1. We seek collaboration, possibly in Germany, to confirm and document the ancestors of Angelika Bosch Schmid (1826- ), and of her husband Johann Georg Bϋhler (1819-). We would like to identify the precise location of their orchard photo shown above.

2. We would like to confirm and document the ancestors of Leopold Kowoll Hoffmann (1832- ) and his wife Dorothea Rau, possibly in Poland or Germany.

3. We would like to document the dates of passage to Chile and vessels of both Bϋhler-Bosch brothers.

4. We would welcome genealogical information about ¨Matthaeus Bϋhler Bosch¨, the Bϋhler-Hott branch and any early information they may have about our earliest german ancestors.
